Interesting email received about Blackopstoys domain registration

We were contacted late last week by a domain registration company in China.  It seems one of their customers put in an application to register blackopstoys.cn (China), blackopstoys.com.cn, blackopstoys.net.cn ….well you get the idea.  The company was kind enough to let us know of the registration request, but then kept asking over and over again that if we wanted to protect our domain name, we should register all the domains with them.  Interesting.

Even without an official US government trademark covering our company name, having a business license and a history of doing business under the Blackopstoys name does protect us from name infringement.  I did a lot of research and we would be well within our right to sue anyone who registered blackopstoys [dot] anything.  So pre-emptively, I registered a number of the .cn (China) variations of blackopstoys, but not all of them, like .asia and .hk.cn (Hong Kong).  And I suppose that means I’ll need to keep an eye out for blackopstoys.asia and the like.

I just don’t understand why this person would even want to register our domain?  That part doesn’t make sense, unless they are hoping to capitalize on our business and think that customers won’t notice.

So if any of you see blackopstoys.asia or blackopstoys.hk.cn or anything and it doesn’t look like it’s really us, could you send an email our way.  We certainly don’t have a legal team, but I’m pretty sure I could navigate legalzoom.com and get something to send their way.
